Gum & Bone Therapy

Gum and Bone Therapy are treatments that focus on the restoration of the functions of the gums and jawbone, including the regeneration or replacement of damaged and diseased soft tissues and bone. Gum and Bone Therapy is available in the practice of Justin Devack DMD, PA in Tamarac, FL.

There are several forms of this therapy, and every recommendation is made by your dentist on a case-to-case basis, depending on the presentation of your oral cavity.

Forms of Treatment under Gum and Bone Therapy

Periodontal or gum disease is a common problem. For gum diseases that are not yet advanced, deep cleaning or scaling and root planing may be all that’s needed to treat it. For advanced cases of gum degradation, however, the surgical procedure of gum grafting may be what your dentist will recommend.

Periodontal laser treatment can also be considered in cases of receding gums, especially when there is already evidence of bacterial proliferation in the pocket between the recessed gum and the affected tooth. Sometimes, a dental implant may also be necessary as part of dental rehabilitation. For implants to be successful, other factors need to be considered, such as bone grafting.

Gum and bone problems often arise because the signs of gum disease, which is often a precursor to bone problems (except in cases of direct trauma to the bone), are not easily seen or recognized. The build-up of plaque and tartar can take some time, and a lack of good oral hygiene only makes the situation worse.

The best way advocated by dental professional to avoid oral health issues is still to be dedicated in observing good oral hygiene.

A few lifestyle changes, such as the following, can be done to improve the health of your mouth’s tissues, jawbone, teeth, and gums:

  • Daily brushing at least 2x a day
  • Daily flossing
  • Semi-annual visits to your dentist for check-ups
  • Avoiding or stopping smoking
  • Maintaining a balanced diet and avoiding too many sweets

Still, it is possible that some dental diseases can happen because of trauma, medication, and genetic predisposition. The key to good oral health is to act immediately once a dental issue has been identified.

However, should there be a need for gum and bone therapy, your dentist will inform you about all your options, so that you can make an informed choice.
